A Disgusting New Low In Republican Campaign Tactics

The State Republican Party in Colorado has achieved a breathtaking new low in campaign negativity.

Ed Perlmutter, the Democratic candidate in Colorado's 7th Congressional District, is running ahead of rival Rick O'Donnell in all the polls.

So the Republicans sent out a piece of direct mail. It closely resembles a notice that homeowners would get in the mail if a registered sex offender moved into their neighborhood; indeed, it has 'Sex Offender Notification' at the top of the piece.

The clear implication, which happens to be entirely false, is that Perlmutter is a sex offender.

This is about as despicable as it gets. Nothing could be lower than smearing your opponent in this manner. It is yet another sign of the desperation - and the disgustingly low standards - of the Republican Party today.

I cannot adequately express my outrage over this vile piece of evil propaganda. As many have said before me, the Republicans should be ashamed of what their party has become.

For the Republicans to stoop to such a "low", is not only an insult to the person indicated but also to the 600,000 plus Reformed Sex Offenders across the country. Sex offenders have a hard enough time getting back into society due to the hate and hysterics shown by elected officials. To portray an innocent as a sex offender, this republican candidate should in good conscious, drop from the race for his morals show he will stoop to doing anything no matter how low it is.

Personally, I find the whole sex offender issue to be blown out of proportion for the facts indicate that Reformed Sex Offenders have the 2nd lowest recidivism rate next to murder.

Michael - I am glad to see that others are equally disgusted by the hysteria that our society revels in re. sex offenders. The truth is that someone can be designated a 'sex offender' for acts which are nothing more than tomfoolery - for example, a college football player was so labelled for mooning a rival team bus. Naturally I expect REAL sex offenders to be locked up - and for a long time (maybe even longer than they lock up people who smoke marijuana, shock, horror) but a great many people's lives are ruined by a false designation. Our society needs scapegoats - gays, 'sex offenders', John Kerry - we don't seem to be able to go a single day without blaming our own woes on somebody else.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Rev. Ted Haggard stepped down as president of the influential National Association of Evangelicals on Thursday after being accused of carrying on an affair with a gay man.

Haggard also stepped down as head of his 14,000-member New Life Church pending an investigation by a church panel, saying he could "not continue to minister under the cloud created by the accusations."

The investigation came after a 49-year-old man told a Denver radio station that Haggard paid him to have sex.
